The Greer Steel LaserMatte
Greer Steel Company, the premier manufacturer of Cold Rolled Strip Steel in North America since 1917, has commissioned state of the art laser texturing equipment providing the highest quality surface finishes anywhere in the world.
Surface finishes affect metal formability, lubrication retention, surface contact area, paint adherence, appearance, and surface bonding area in part production. They also affect functionality and wear rates between mating surfaces in end-use applications. Greer Steel's new "LaserMatte" equipment, the only unit of its kind in the United States, provides the ultimate finish for metal forming and painting operations.
The laser textured surface is produced through a mechanically pulsed, high-energy CO2 laser to melt microscopic, circular surface areas on the roll. A gas jet then displaces the melted material, creating crater-like indentations. With computer settings providing repeatable crater depth, spacing, and size, material surface properties can be precisely controlled to fit various customer requirements. Laser texturing produces a uniform, regulated textured pattern, which allows for retention of consistent quantities of die lube, leading to greater consistency in metal forming operations.
