Metallurgical Testing - Types of Tests
Bend – ASTM E290
Testing available with the bend parallel and perpendicular to the rolling direction. (Requirements must be noted)
Olsen Ball Punch – ASTM E643
Test includes maximum height at rupture.
Hardness – ASTM E18
Test includes three readings and an average as well as a conversion to a standard scale per ASTM E140.
Tensile – ASTM E8
Test includes tensile, yield, and elongation percentage.
Surface Finish – SAE J911
Test includes 10 random readings and an average per side. Sides must be designated for the final report and the sample must be relatively flat to be properly measured.
Grain Size – ASTM E112
We can measure the ferritic grain size only. Readings are done using the optical comparison method. Measurement direction must be noted.
Inclusion Content – ASTM E45 (Method A)
Reading are done using the optical comparison method. Measurement direction must be noted.
Decarburization – ASTM E1077/SAE J419
Readings are done optically.
Structure – Readings are done optically
Ferrous materials only at this time. The results will be whether or not the material is pearlitic, spheroidized with a percentage of spheroidization, or heat treated.
Chemistry – ASTM E415
Chemistry is performed using optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Elements reported are C, Mn, P, S, Si, Ni, Cr, Cu, and Mo.
Coercitivy – ASTM A848
Measurement direction should be indicated.
