Greer Steel Invests In Future - New Slitter, New Crane On The Way

Monday, 30 April 2007 21:15

Dover, OH—Greer Steel Company announced today that the company will invest in a new precision slitting line and a new crane.

Slated for installation in the first quarter of 2008, the new ¼”x 60” slitting line will be able to process material at speeds up to 900 feet per minute.  The line has the capability to process material with yield and shear strengths up to and including 120,000 psi.

The machine, which will be provided by SMS Demag, Ltd., was selected for its ability to accurately and efficiently support processing of Greer’s increased range of products. Upon installation, the new slitter will further enhance Greer’s capability to efficiently produce not only its current product line, but also the increased requirements of new products, such as Ultra High Strength Steel.

Greer CEO and President, John Raese, explained, “Our customers are looking for engineered products that exhibit improved strength, formability and weight savings over conventional products. To answer that need Greer Steel Co. has expanded it’s high strength low alloy steel program to offer ultra high strength grades with minimum yield strengths as high as 150,000psi.  With the addition of Ultra High Strength Steel grades, the decision to install a slitter to support the processing of those products is a wise investment that will pay off for us and for our customers.”

In addition to the slitting line, Greer has also issued a purchase order for a new 40-ton, top running crane that will be installed to service the company’s pickling and primary slitting departments.   The crane will allow Greer to receive larger coils, thus helping to improve efficiency from the very beginning of the production line.

The crane, which has a 110-foot span, will be built by Zenar Corporation and is scheduled for delivery to Greer in October of 2007.
